My Opinion for Current Indonesia Football National Team

The Indonesian national team is set to continue its journey in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Up next, the team will face China on June 5, 2025, followed by a match against Japan on June 10, 2025. Currently, Indonesia sits in fourth place with 9 points, behind Japan (20), Australia (13), and Saudi Arabia (10). If Indonesia manages to win both of their remaining matches, their chances of qualifying directly for the 2026 World Cup will be wide open.

To be honest, I’ve become somewhat indifferent in following the national team’s progress after the coaching drama. It was a huge gamble by the PSSI (Indonesian Football Association) to fire the coach in the middle of an ongoing qualification campaign—especially considering the drama surrounding the decision at the time. Changing coaches is actually quite normal, but I still struggle to see it as a reasonable move because there was a clear effort to spin a narrative around Shin Tae-yong’s performance, highlighting his “failure” in the AFF Cup and stories about players being incompatible with the coach.

On top of that, the PSSI chairman went on a podcast tour seemingly just to justify the decision to replace the coach. As if that wasn't enough, buzzers were mobilized to paint a negative image of STY. Like... what was the point? If you want to change the coach, just do it. No need to manipulate public opinion or badmouth the previous coach.

Differences in vision and mission between the federation and the coach are normal. If things reach a point where they can no longer work together, then just end the contract—no need to add unnecessary drama or go on a podcast circuit. Before all that drama, I was genuinely excited about the national team’s journey, especially since the Asian Cup (around 2022, if I’m not mistaken). Now, I just casually check for updates—there’s no need to follow closely anymore.

My hope is that PSSI becomes more professional and stops adding unnecessary drama. But honestly, who knows when that will happen. The organization is still filled with the same old people, and there are far too many interests involved beyond just pure sporting achievement.
